‘Ted Lasso’ Season 2 trailer drops and Jets are part of the joke

Kindness is making a comeback. Just not for the Jets.

The trailer for Season 2 of the hit Apple TV comedy “Ted Lasso” dropped on Tuesday and the team with the longest playoff drought in the NFL finds itself a direct target.

A surprise hit during the global pandemic last summer for delivering much needed aw-shucks goodness with Jason Sudeikis playing Coach Lasso, an American football coach from Kansas hired to manage a struggling professional soccer team in England, the tagline for the second season states that “Kindness is making a comeback.”

But apparently even the woeful Jets — winners of just two games last season and without a winning record since 2015 — aren’t worthy of Lasso’s kindness.

The trailer ends with Lasso chatting it up with fellow AFC Richmond coaches about the Premier League team’s winless streak.

“Back home, if a team was playing poorly, we don’t call them unlucky,” Lasso explains.

“What do we call them, coach?” Lasso asks his assistant Coach Beard (played by Brendan Hunt).

“New York Jets,” deadpans Beard.

Gang Green has plenty of work to do if they want to stop being the butt of all jokes around the American version of professional football. The Jets last made the playoffs in 2010 (the next longest drought is five seasons) and fired head coach Adam Gase after two disastrous seasons in January. Then earlier this month the team gave up on Sam Darnold — the third overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft — by trading him to the Carolina Panthers for draft picks.

The latest rebuild of the franchise starts at the end of the month when the team is expected to select BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with the second overall pick in the draft.

A new QB — along with a new head coach in Robert Saleh — haven’t convinced oddsmakers that the writers of “Ted Lasso” should find a new team to pick on. Vegas has set the over/under on Jets wins in 2021 at six.

Season 2 of “Ted Lasso” debuts on Friday, July 23 on Apple TV+. The new-look Jets debut in early September.

The Jets can only hope to have a similar surprise run as “Ted Lasso” had last year. The show based on the character originally dreamed up as a way to promote NBC’s coverage of the Premier League in the U.S. in 2013 slowly built up momentum and became one of the great TV success stories during the pandemic. Sudeikis even nabbed a Golden Globe in the Best Comedy actor category.

Jets fans would certainly take Wilson as rookie of the year.

Stay tuned.
